Arborist Groundsman

The Arborist Groundsman is eager to learn, support the crew & build safe habits. They are focused on learning everything about professional tree work, how a job site flows, how to work safely and how to be productive without creating risk. They support the crew however is needed and strive to be productive & efficient.

This role is inclusive of three groundsman levels.

Arborist Field Operator Career Path

Three clearly defined levels — each one building on the last. Whether you're brand new to the industry or a seasoned field operator, there's a place for you and a path to move up.

AFO I

Arborist Field Operator I

For candidates who are new to the industry and eager to learn the fundamentals of professional tree work.

Primary Focus
  • Learn jobsite safety, awareness, and crew communication
  • Support cleanup, brush dragging, traffic control, and general labor tasks
  • Build productive work habits and a strong foundation for advancement
AFO II

Arborist Field Operator II

For team members who have demonstrated reliability and can safely operate equipment while supporting production.

Primary Focus
  • Operate chippers, mini skid steers, chainsaws, and other equipment safely
  • Anticipate crew needs and contribute to overall job efficiency
  • Maintain equipment and uphold Tree Ya Later safety standards
AFO III

Arborist Field Operator III

For experienced groundsmen who help coordinate ground operations and support the Climber/Crew Leader.

Primary Focus
  • Manage ropes, rigging systems, drop zones, and worksite organization
  • Train and mentor newer Groundsmen (AFO I & II)
  • Set the pace of the job and ensure safe, efficient production

The Role

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a spotter for vehicles backing up and general operation
  • Ensure jobsite is cleaner when done than before we arrived
  • Ensure all tools are collected and stored upon job completion
  • Follow all safety procedures and wear PPE always
  • Anticipate where assistance will be needed before being asked (no hands in pockets)
  • Move brush and debris efficiently
  • Assist with job site clean-up
  • Observe chipper operations (no independent operation)
  • Learn tool names, storage locations, and handling
  • Support climber and roper under direct supervision
  • Study and practice to upgrade to Lead Arborist Groundsman
Qualifications

Requirements

  • Understand basic job site safety
  • Strong situational awareness
  • Research and train for chainsaw use
  • Positive attitude — ask questions and accept coaching
  • Team player — assist crew members in all tasks
  • Driver's license & reliable transportation
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a plus
Compensation

Pay & Benefits

Pay Range
$23.75–$31.25/hr
Based on experience, skillset, and performance

● Pay is based on candidate's experience, skillset, and performance.

● Additional compensation available for candidates holding a valid CDL.
