Do You Need a Permit to Remove a Tree in New Jersey?

Often, yes. Under New Jersey's stormwater rules, municipalities across the state adopted tree removal and replacement ordinances, and a lot of Monmouth and Ocean County homeowners are running into them for the first time. The details vary town to town, but the pattern is usually the same: past a certain trunk size, you file an application before the tree comes down, and you may be asked to replace it.

What Usually Triggers a Permit

• Trunk size. Most ordinances kick in above a set diameter or circumference measured at chest height.
• How many trees. Removing several at once is more likely to need review than taking down one.
• Where the tree sits. Street trees, buffer areas, wetlands, and steep slopes usually get extra scrutiny.
• Replacement planting. Many towns ask you to plant replacements or pay into a tree fund.
• Hazard exemption. Dead, dying, and dangerous trees are frequently exempt, though some towns still want documentation.
