Often, yes. Under New Jersey's stormwater rules, municipalities across the state adopted tree removal and replacement ordinances, and a lot of Monmouth and Ocean County homeowners are running into them for the first time. The details vary town to town, but the pattern is usually the same: past a certain trunk size, you file an application before the tree comes down, and you may be asked to replace it.
The good news is that it is usually straightforward, and dead, dying, or genuinely hazardous trees are commonly exempt. We deal with these ordinances every week. Tell us your town and what you are trying to take down, and we will tell you exactly where you stand before you file anything.
Not sure whether your tree even needs to come down? Our ISA Certified Arborists will give you a straight answer, and if pruning solves it we will say so.
Where the town publishes an application, the card opens it. Some towns only take applications in person, through a zoning office, or an online portal. Confirm with your town before you file. Not sure which applies to you? Call or text 732-372-3596.
Ocean County coverage is Brick, Jackson, Point Pleasant, Point Pleasant Beach, and northern Toms River. Do not see your town? Call us and we will point you to the right office if we serve it.
We are not attorneys and we cannot file your application for you, but we are not going to hand you a form and disappear either. During your free estimate we will tell you whether your town is likely to require a permit, what size threshold applies, whether your tree may qualify as a hazard, and what documentation the town usually wants. Most homeowners find the process much smaller than they feared.
Then we do the part you actually hired us for: taking the tree down safely, cleaning up, and grinding the stump if you want the spot back.
Storm damage and hazard trees, handled fast. Hazards are often permit-exempt.

The wind took down a 25 ft Pine tree in my back yard. I called Joe and left a message. Joe returned my call, provided me a date and time. This is worth mentioning as no one returns a call for service. Joe arrived early on the agreed day. Joe removed all brush, all logs and used a blower to clean up the property. The job was immaculate, Joe even broom swept the curb.
From my initial inquiry, to the estimate appointment, to the arrival to start work, Tree Ya Later was on top of it! They replied within 24 hours. Melissa was friendly, helpful and professional. Dwayne came out to give me an estimate the next day. We agreed on a competitive price. The crew arrived a few minutes before 8, ready to go. They cleaned up really great!
I had several overgrown trees and shrubs removed. Joe and his team were very easy to deal with. They were also very safe. One of the trees was hanging over our house and Joe had the necessary equipment to remove it without any worry. Joe was also very communicative about scheduling.
Tree Ya Later did an awesome job taking out two willows for me. Their communication was great! They came out right away for a quote and gave me a very fair price. The men were very thorough and cleaned up great! They took a fence out to get in the back and put the fence back better than it was!
I have used Tree Ya Later on multiple occasions now. From taking down complicated trees in small places, to consulting me on issues with trees in the future, to moving rock around my yard with his equipment. Professional, courteous, on-time and clean. I couldn't suggest a better company to trust with your property.
I had to have my tree trimmed. They came in the rain, cut it back beautifully. Cleaned up and were very polite and friendly. Good workers. The office staff was exceptional and very helpful.
