Do You Need a Permit to Remove a Tree in New Jersey?
Often, yes. Under New Jersey's stormwater rules, municipalities across the state adopted tree removal and replacement ordinances, and a lot of Monmouth and Ocean County homeowners are running into them for the first time. The details vary town to town, but the pattern is usually the same: past a certain trunk size, you file an application before the tree comes down, and you may be asked to replace it.

What Usually Triggers a Permit
- Trunk size. Most ordinances kick in above a set diameter or circumference measured at chest height.

- Replacement planting. Many towns ask you to plant replacements or pay into a tree fund.
