Often, yes. Under New Jersey's stormwater rules, municipalities across the state adopted tree removal and replacement ordinances, and a lot of Monmouth and Ocean County homeowners are running into them for the first time. The details vary town to town, but the pattern is usually the same: past a certain trunk size, you file an application before the tree comes down, and you may be asked to replace it.
The good news is that it is usually straightforward, and dead, dying, or genuinely hazardous trees are commonly exempt. We deal with these ordinances every week. Tell us your town and what you are trying to take down, and we will tell you exactly where you stand before you file anything.
Not sure whether your tree even needs to come down? Our ISA Certified Arborists will give you a straight answer, and if pruning solves it we will say so.
Each link opens that town's official municipal site in a new tab. Requirements change, so confirm with your town before you file. Not sure which applies to you? Call or text 732-372-3596.
Do not see your town? We work across both counties. Call us and we will point you to the right office.
We are not attorneys and we cannot file your application for you, but we are not going to hand you a form and disappear either. During your free estimate we will tell you whether your town is likely to require a permit, what size threshold applies, whether your tree may qualify as a hazard, and what documentation the town usually wants. Most homeowners find the process much smaller than they feared.
Then we do the part you actually hired us for: taking the tree down safely, cleaning up, and grinding the stump if you want the spot back.
Storm damage and hazard trees, handled fast. Hazards are often permit-exempt.
